How to attract and retain the right staff to your business

It is a common frustration for managers to hire and keep employees that are a good fit for the business. Attracting employees that become valuable assets to your business can be tricky – so here are some tips to help you with the process:

  • Hire for culture fit – not qualifications

When tossing up between 2 potential employees where one has a bit more training/experience and the other is a better fit for the culture of your organisation, who do you pick? Choose the person that suits the environment of your organisation and compliments your culture. After all, you can train employees to learn new skills – but you can’t change their personality!

  • Top notch advertising for available positions

Attracting the right people for your business can be as simple as creating an advertisement that reflects the values and culture of your company. If you are looking for an upbeat and ambitious employee, be sure to write an ad that will spark their interest.

  • Nail the interview process

An interview can be a great insight into how your potential employee could fit into the business – providing you ask the right questions! Be sure to cover the important aspects such as verifying knowledge and qualifications, but also throw some questions that they wouldn’t expect! This will help you to better understand their personality and if they would operate well within your business environment.

  • Show inspiring leadership

Jobs that are somewhat inconvenient for an employee to get to are much more attractive when managers are constantly inspiring their staff. An organisation that boasts a reputation of having strong management and leadership will be far more likely to attract and retain employees; even if it is slightly inconvenient!

  • Offer opportunities for training and advancement

Providing opportunities for training or promotion in order for advancement is highly regarded. The chance to move up in the organisation or to develop individual skills is a great way to increase motivation and the likelihood of retaining your staff. Not only does this allow staff to work towards personal goals – but they actively assist you in achieving organisation oriented goals.

  • Recognise your employee’s efforts

Employees often feel unappreciated in their roles; therefore regularly thanking and rewarding them for a job well done positively reinforces that they matter. Showing that you need them as much as they need you builds a mutual relationship of respect. When employees feel undervalued or as if they don’t matter – they won’t stick around! After all, your business is only as good as its people. So go ahead – attract great staff and keep them around to continue building your business towards greatness!
